| Crude Oil/
Petroleum : |
Naturally occurring
mineral oil consisting essentially of hydrocarbons, of a very
dark colour. |
| Polymers : |
Polymerisation: the reaction from
which high mass molecules are formed from the bonding of low
mass molecules (monomers). |
| Bitumens : |
Natural organic substance or obtained
from the distillation of crude oil, based on hydrocarbons,
very dark brown or black, very viscous or solid, used in construction
and public works (road-coverings,
..) |
| Synthetic Binders : |
Mixture of synthetic products (oils
and resins) by-products of crude oil and having the distinctive
characteristic of being able to be coloured, used in the manufacture
of coloured road-coverings. |
| Asphalt Mix : |
The bitumens used to make road-coverings
are by-products of the distillation of crude oil and are called
'penetration-grade asphalt'. |
| Bitumen Emulsions : |
Suspension of bitumens in an aqueous
phase made up of water and emulsifiers. |
| Cutback Bitumens : |
Asphalt binder composed of bitumens
and special oils, by-products of the distillation of crude
oil. Contrary to emulsions used at low temperatures (less
than 80°) cutback bitumens unmodified by polymers are
used at an ambient temperature of 150°. |
| Polymer Modified Bitumens : |
Homogenous mixture made up in the
most part of petroleum bitumen modified by one or several
polymers. These polymers have either elastic properties (elastomers)
or plastic properties (plastomers). |
| Asphalt Mix : |
The polymer modified bitumens used
in the making of road-coverings are usually made up of petroleum
bitumens and polymers possessing elastomeric and thermoplastic
properties. |
| Elastomeric Bitumen Emulsions
: |
Asphalt binder used cold or at
a low temperature (max. 80°) in which the binder is made
of an elastomeric bitumen (a polymer with elastic properties). |
| Elastomeric Cutback Bitumens
: |
Mixture of bitumens modified by
elastomers (polymers with elastic properties) and special
oils,by-products of crude oil. Contrary to emulsions used
at low temperatures (less than 80°), cutback bitumens
modified by polymers are used at an ambient temperature of
150°. |
| Sealing Compound : |
Polymer modified bitumens in which
the quantity of polymers is significantly higher than in other
asphalt binders. These polymers are generally elastomers.
The sealing compounds are intended for the making of superficial
seals in cement concrete road coverings. |
| Synthetic Binders modified by
polymers : |
As for the crude oil binders, the
polymers used to modify synthetic binders give them specific
thermoplastic properties, adapted to different uses. |
| Mix / Coating : |
Synthetic binders modified by polymers
used in the making of coloured road coverings giving them
bright, long-lasting colours that petroleum-based bitumens
are incapable of giving. |
| Emulsions : |
The emulsions of synthetic binders
modified by polymers are used in the making of thin, coloured
road-coverings made cold and known as 'slurry surfacing'.
These emulsions are also used for the re-jointing of paving
slabs of natural stone. |
| Sealing Compound : |
The light sealing compound (Masse
M.S.C.) is a special product. It is composed of synthetic
binders modified by polymers with elastomeric thermoplastic
properties so the quantity is significantly higher than in
other asphalt binders made from the same binder. The light
sealing compound is proposed for the treatment of cracks in
all types of road coverings (cement concrete or bituminous
materials). |
